Councillors have recently been told that Gedling Borough is heading for a £498,200 overspend on this year's budget. This enormous overspend is the only one we can remember in the last 26 years. It's taken Gedling's ruling Tories just 15 months of slackness to turn a financially sound council into a financial mess.

District councils like Gedling have the legal responsibility to deal with homelessness in their area. For years many councils in the East Midlands have solved their homelessness problems by sending their homeless citizens to Nottingham City Council who kindly paid for their care. Two or three years ago, Nottingham City had finally had enough of paying for everyone else's homelessness problems and shut their doors to outsiders, forcing councils like Gedling to spend their own money on the problem. Since then, Gedling has had to employed officers (costing over £100,000 per year and still rising) to deal with this issue.

The ruling Tories on Gedling Council pushed through their budget with a 3% increase in Council Tax. They will keep the extra 6 bin collections in the summer (costing £160,000), scrap the subsidy for police support officers (we lose 6 officers from our streets), saving £132,000 and virtually no money for anything else. They have no ideas and no direction for the council and their priorities are wrong.

At last the County Council have seen sense and voted to keep the Handicruisers. Local campaigners Ted and Christine of Take a Break Carers have worked tirelessly to save the specially adapted coach which is offered for hire to all organisations who want to ensure that their disabled members and their friends can travel in style and comfort.
